UNEP participated in an UNDAC mission to Tajikistan from 12 to 29 March 2006 to advice the Government of Tajikistan on disaster preparedness measures.

UNDAC (UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination) launched a mission to Tajikistan from 12 to 29 March 2006. This was an 'unusual' mission, since it is a departure from its rapid-response post-disaster mandate. The mission looked to assist the Tajik government to prepare for disasters. It consisted of about 12 people from different international organizations and governments all over, and as a part of this mission, UNEP assisted in the environmental aspects of disaster prevention and preparedness.

The UNDAC mission entailed working under the leadership of the United Nations Resident Coordinator to achieve the following results:

  • An evaluation of the capacities of the National Disaster Management System and its executive level in the areas of disaster preparedness and response;
  • Recommendations towards the strengthening of relevant areas, including the required follow-up for implementation of the recommendations;
  • Recommendations on how to strengthen the implementation of the recently revised policies and legislation;
  • A mission report summarizing the analysis and conclusions, and including a listing of the recommendations

The outcome of the mission would feed into especially environmental, but also into economic vulnerability, and would assist all actors in the field of disaster risk management in Tajikistan, including donors, to strategize for the coming years.
