IETC's water and sanitation initiatives aim to improve sustainable
access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation, thereby contributing to
achieving the Millennium Development Goal and WSSD targets of halving the
proportion of people lacking such access. IETC focuses on identifying suitable
EST options; raising technical and institutional capacity to assess, introduce,
and manage such options; supporting on-the-ground implementation on a pilot
basis; and providing information to support implementation using electronic
and other means.
The main initiative in water and sanitation is the Support
for Environmental Management of the Iraqi Marshlands project, within the
framework of the United
Nations Trust Fund for Iraqi Reconstruction. The US$11 million project,
funded by the Government of Japan, supports the sustainable management of
the Iraqi
Marshlands by facilitating strategy formulation, monitoring marsh conditions,
raising capacity of Iraqi decision makers, and providing water, sanitation
and wetland management EST options on a pilot basis. For more information
on the project, please visit: http://marshlands.unep.or.jp.
In addition, IETC
is currently developing other initiatives, including freshwater argmentation,
water and wastewater management practices, and 4R conceptual
platform.
