a training programme on the development of eco-towns in the Asia-Pacific region
from 26 September

IETC recently
signed a Framework Agreement with the Wuxi Municipality in the People’s
Republic of China to develop an integrated waste management plan for the
Wuxi New District. The agreement was signed by Mr Zhang Jian Hua for Wuxi
New District
and Mrs. Monique Barbut for UNEP.
The project is based on the concept of integrated waste management, and will
look at waste constituents that can be recycled and reused to the maximum possible
extent and the development of the city can take place in harmony with the environment.

CITYNET,
APO, GEC and UNEP will organize a thematic session on "Environmentally
Sustainable Industrial Development and the Concept of Eco-Towns in the Asia
Pacific Region" in
Bangkok on 8 October 2005 at Eco-Product International Fair 2005. In the Session,
lessons learnt in the past eco-town initatives and future possibility to apply
the concept of eco-town in the Asia Pacific region will be discussed. For

IETC, in collaboration with GEC and other institutions, recently
organized a High Level Meeting on 3Rs and Integrated Waste Management through
Eco-Town
Development, on 7 June 2005, in Osaka, Japan. Representatives from a number
of international organizations, local government networks and government
ministerial participated in the event. This is an on-going part of IETC's
focus on eco-towns.
A report to be produced as a part of this meeting will be made available
online soon.

UNEP's
Executive Director, Klaus Toepfer, launched UNEP's 3R Platform during the 3R
Ministerial Conference held from
28 to 30
April 2005
in Tokyo,
Japan (PDF 27.9KB).
The 3R Platform is an implementation mechanism where different organizations
can work on different issues of the 3R concept, and simultaneously move
